BRIEF: This alternative school was used as an home for wayward boys in the 1960's. SUMMARY: This alternative school was used as an home for wayward boys in the 1960's. In the stone hallway of the lower school, there have been partial-apparition sightings of a pair of legs and a man wearing a pink shirt and khakis. BRIEF: Haunted Bed & Breakfast in Bentonsport, IA SUMMARY: Built in 1846, and originally called the Ashland House, the property was owned by William Robinson. The Ashland House was built as a hotel for steamboat travelers on the Des Moines river by Morman craftsmen. In 1857 the house was purchased by Lewis Mason and changed its name to the Phoenix Hotel, but was known locally as the Mason House. The house served as a temporary hospital for injured Civil War soldiers and was also part of the Underground Railroad. The house and its grounds are said to be haunted by the spirits of slaves that died before reaching freedom and the soldiers who's lives were claimed while the house was a hospital. BRIEF: The old naval observatory SUMMARY: The Observatory Hill near the Kennedy Center is where the former U.S. Naval Medical School and Naval Hospital were located. Today the complex of buildings is the headquarters of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Department of the Navy, and is closed to the public. The domed building visible from the corner of E and 23rd Streets was the original Naval Observatory (1844-1893). After the Observatory moved to its current location on Massachusetts Avenue, the building became the home of the Naval Museum of Hygiene (1894-1902) and then the Naval Medical School. BRIEF: Grandma's old, old, old house. SUMMARY: This old house is packed full of mysteries that have haunted several inhabitants and guests over the years.
