The Town of Indian Head was part of the territory of the Algonquin Indians who lived by the lower Potomac River. In 1608, the Native American groups north of the Potomac River were divided into ten chiefdoms. The chiefdoms consisted of the Piscataway, Anacostan, Mattawoman, Nanjemoy, and Portobaco tribes. The tribes were headed by the Piscataways whose chief was known as the Tayac.
