BRIEF: An important point, geographically, historically SUMMARY: Harper's Ferry is located under the cliffs overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. This is the location where John Brown attempted to start a slave uprising in the South. Brown came to Harper's Ferry to seize the 100,000 muskets kept in the federal arsenal. Harper's Ferry was strategically located as it was on both low and high ground at a key juncture of two rivers (Potomac and Shenandoah) and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. It also had the United States Armory and Arsenal. BRIEF: Lady in Red SUMMARY: The courthouse is haunted by a ghostly woman. She has been seen by several people. Uncommonly, her ghostly apparition has been seen wearing a red dress, which has been described as washed-out or "whitish-red" almost pink, whispy and mostly unsaturated. It also was reportedly used by Union Troops during the Civil War.
A comedian, Marshall Buehl from Alabama, was entertaining the audience in the Opera House by telling political jokes. The audience was pro-North and they became irate over his jokes. When he was packing up to leave the town he was attacked by a group of people who stabbed him and left him to die.
