BRIEF: Apparition of Dangerfield Newby still wonders Hog Alley SUMMARY: The first man to be killed in John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry was a free black man named Dangerfield Newby. He was killed by a spike being driven through his throat. He joined Brown's army in hopes of freeing his family from bondage in Virginia. His ghost is still seen walking down Hog Alley. He is dressed in baggy trousers and an old hat, and he has a terrible scar running down his throat. BRIEF: Don't build a graveyard surrounded by tall limestone walls SUMMARY: This cemetery is located in Bethany which is one of West Virginia's oldest college towns. The cemetery has an eerie presence, people feel apprehensive when they walk in the cemetery, which is surrounded by tall limestone walls. BRIEF: Underground Railroad and other history have left spirits behind SUMMARY: The Belmont House was built in 1738. It sits on 82 acres of land. The mansion was built by Caleb Dorsey but is now owned by the American Chemical Society.
The "Belmont Conference" is an old estate that has been converted into a conference center. Workers at the conference center have heard the sounds of horses race up the long driveway; then, a knock is often heard at the front door. But, no one is ever there. BRIEF: Aunt Julia's shaky stool led to demise SUMMARY: Beverly Litsinger helped the Fells Point Preservation Society to develop the Fells Point Ghost Walk by verifying if places were really haunted. While investigating the sites, a man appeared before his house. BRIEF: Sightings of a "witch ghost" in the cemetery; puts flowers on childrens' graves. SUMMARY: Sightings have been reported of a "witch ghost" who, late at night, glides through the cemetery putting flowers on childrens' graves.
